A real replacement is a tear-off, not a layover. We strip the old system down to bare decking, then inspect every sheet of plywood before anything new goes on. Architectural asphalt shingle is the default and it is a good roof when installed correctly. But if you plan to stay in the house, look hard at stone-coated metal, which carries far better wind performance and can outlive two asphalt roofs, or concrete and clay tile if that is the look your neighborhood calls for.
